Mathematics

In Massachusetts, mathematics education builds students' understanding and skills through active engagement in meaningful mathematics. The content and practice standards included in the Massachusetts Mathematics Curriculum Framework focus on developing students in the following areas:

  • Conceptual understanding — make sense of the math, reason about and understand math concepts and ideas
  • Procedural skills — know mathematical facts, compute and do the math
  • Capacity — solve a wide range of problems in various contexts by reasoning, thinking, and applying the mathematics they have learned.

  • Architecture for Proportional Reasoning
This professional development suite from the DESE Developing Proportional Reasoning Project is designed to help math educators, leaders, curriculum planners, and others become familiar with the progression of proportional reasoning development in the pathway from PreK to High School. This suite of tools will support math educators in providing all students, including English learners (ELs), students with learning disabilities, struggling students, as well as students below, at, and above grade level with access to mathematics specified in the Massachusetts Curriculum Framework. In the past year, while school and district leaders, educators, students, and families have demonstrated ingenuity and perseverance, students across grades K–12 did not receive typical mathematics instruction. With this suite of tools, math educators can prepare for student reentry and can provide all students, at all levels, with the opportunity to learn the mathematics they need for college readiness, career readiness, and good world citizenship.
